CMAT vs MAH CET: Which MBA Entrance Exam Should You Choose?

Choosing the right entrance exam is the first step toward a successful management career. Two of the most popular options for MBA aspirants in India are the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) and the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MAH CET).

While both open doors to prestigious B-schools, they differ significantly in terms of scope, pattern, and strategy. At IIM360, we’ve broken down the key differences to help you decide which exam aligns best with your goals.

1. Core Overview: National vs. State Level

  • CMAT (Common Management Admission Test): Conducted by the NTA, this is a national-level exam. It is accepted by over 1,000 AICTE-approved participating institutes across India.

  • MAH CET (MBA/MMS-CET): This is a state-level exam conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Maharashtra. It is the primary gateway for admission to top-tier Maharashtra-based institutes like JBIMS and SIMSREE.

2. Exam Pattern & Difficulty

3. Syllabus Breakdown

  2. Logical Reasoning: 20 Questions

  3. Language Comprehension: 20 Questions

  4. General Awareness: 20 Questions

  5. Innovation & Entrepreneurship: 20 Questions (A unique section that tests business mindset).

MAH CET Sections:

  1. Logical Reasoning: 75 Questions (Heavy emphasis here!)

  2. Abstract Reasoning: 25 Questions (Visual/Pattern-based)

  3. Quantitative Aptitude: 50 Questions

  4. Verbal Ability/Reading Comprehension: 50 Questions

4. Top Colleges Accepting Scores

  • CMAT Scores: Accepted by JBIMS, Sydenham (SIMSREE), PUMBA, K. J. Somaiya, GIM Goa, and Great Lakes.

  • MAH CET Scores: Preferred for Maharashtra's "Big Three"—JBIMS, SIMSREE, and PUMBA—along with hundreds of other state colleges like Welingkar and MET.

5. Application Fees

  • CMAT: General (Male) ₹2,500; General (Female/EWS/SC/ST) ₹1,250.

  • MAH CET: Open Category (OMS/MS) ₹1,500; Reserved Categories ₹1,300.

IIM360 Expert Verdict: Which should you take?

  • Choose CMAT if: You want a wide range of college options across multiple states and have a strong grasp of General Knowledge and Innovation concepts.

  • Choose MAH CET if: You are targeting top Mumbai or Pune colleges and have high "speed-accuracy" skills, as you need to solve 200 questions in just 150 minutes.

Why not both? Many students at IIM360 prepare for both simultaneously since the core sections (Quant, Verbal, Reasoning) overlap significantly.
